Know When to Fold ‘Em workshop at Studio Place Arts – Day 3
Last Thursday was the last day of my 3-session workshop, Know When to Fold ‘Em, at Studio Place Arts.
I wavered between happiness and sadness during the class – watching students complete work was great but I knew that things were coming to an end. My students were awesome! Seriously, I would like to keep these women and take them to every workshop I ever teach.
This last session focused on creating content for the 4 books completed during earlier sessions. Prior to class, I spent some time reading about developing content for artist books.
Thankfully, I was able to find a great resource right in my own library – Creating Artists’ Books by Sarah Bodman (ISBN: 0823010120). Bodman explained that in general, the structure and materials you use should work together to support your concept and help to increase understanding of your message.
I reviewed the different structures made in class and asked my students think about what the different forms suggested – how could these qualities impact the content you put into them?
I appreciated having had the opportunity to watch as each of my students considered the relationship between form and content. The bottom line is that everyone is going to approach that relationship differently – that’s what makes the process so interesting.
Below are some images of the work that was created during the final day of class.
